Dear friends and partners in the Lord’s work at CEH, As we approach the holidays once again, we are very grateful to God for His multitude of blessings. We are thriving with numerous new ministry avenues while maintaining our central Mission Vision and Purposes in medicine, surgery, education, evangelism and discipleship to His glory. “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. And do not forget to do good and share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:15-16 Specialty Training Teams We initiated a new program of several specialty physician teams working with our hospital staff for short periods of intensive training. Dr. Shawn O’Driscoll and Dr. Duane Anderson are going out in early December to work with Dr. Paul and the OR staff on orthopedics and blessing us with additional equipment and materials. Dr. Joel Michaelson will also go out to work with Dr. Bello in dentistry during the same period. Chantal O’Driscoll will encourage and facilitate the Fresh Rosée school with its expanded programs. Pray for the effectiveness of this team. Pray also that we will be able to send out similar teams at least quarterly in the coming year. Surgery & Orthopedics Dr. Paul, our General Surgeon, is freed to concentrate more on orthopedics as the Sign Nail — “Rise up and Walk” program has developed. Dr. Paul was invited by Sign Nail to attend and present two case studies at their orthopedic surgical conference in the State of Washington each of the last three years and found this very profitable. Dr. Paul is introducing the Sign Nail procedures to the nation of Guinea. In February 2023, the National TV station filmed a three-minute documentary about these successful orthopedic procedures and broadcast it three times nationally. This video is on the CEH website with English subtitles. We are now performing more cases of trauma and orthopedics coming from near and distant areas! Visiting African Doctors We engaged three Christian African doctors: Dr. J. Ve, Dr. F. Kohol, and Dr. Kabore from Cote D’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, to cover our surgical services during Dr. Paul’s six-week absence for vacation and Sign Nail training. Each participated in patient care, staff devotions and MIAPE chapel services. Their constructive criticism and suggestions are invaluable in improving our current services. Several of them are willing to help cover gaps in the future as well. Medical Leadership Dr. David stepped up to serve as Medical Director while maintaining his emphasis on General Medicine, Pediatrics and the HIV treatment program. Dr. Jean Paul is freer to develop our OB Gyn services for which he had five months training several years ago at a Mali mission hospital specializing in this care. He also does significant general medical consultations. We are prayerfully seeking other young doctors to train in various areas of medicine and surgery as we did for about six other doctors in past years. Nursing School Progress The nursing school is now training six students from the first promotion in practical nursing skills. Some didactic subjects will be taught by the doctors and biomedical staff and lab and pharmacy staff. Pray for the quality of education and the ability of these students to learn and practice new improved skills well with patients. We are very pleased with their progress thus far. Doris Nuss RN (seconded to CEH from CMA) is now retired, so we need new nurse educators for future classes. PhilAfrican, a Swiss Bible Mission, offered to recruit and second to us a nurse for nursing education in the coming year. This is part of the full team of well-trained/western level staff who can improve our total care through the Guinean medical professionals we already have. Additional nurse educators are also needed! Our CEH website lists the numerous personnel needs we have. Pray to the Lord of the Harvest for this critical objective. Technology & Telemedicine We hope within the year to have internet connection through Starlink that should allow some teaching by Zoom as well as medical consult support to our doctors on patient care. Pray ultimately that this is all to the glory of God. This again would bring unprecedented advances in medical education and care for patients in Guinea. GMHC & Global Connections Drs. Mike and Denise Balon, Dr. Dwight and Debbie Slater and Dr. Steve Merry attended the Global Missions Health Conference (GMHC) in Louisville, KY in November representing CEH. Our purpose was to present our work and build strategic alliances that will result in greater resources - human and material - to provide qualitative and quantitative improvements at CEH to spread the love of Jesus in Guinea by word and deed and improve our healing ministry in Guinea.
This annual forum at GMHC allows contacts with individuals and missions that are like minded and opens great opportunities for recruitment and seconding relationships essential to our ministry development. We made 26 good contacts of potential future colleagues and advanced the potential of seconding partnerships with other missions, and in recruitment of African doctors already residency trained. Dr. Steve also represented Christian Academy of African Physicians (CAAP) Family Med residency programs of which he is a co-founder. Samaritan’s Purse & World Medical Missions God is opening an additional door for a new relationship with Samaritan’s Purse and World Medical Missions (WMM). Dr. Steve Merry and Dr. Dwight Slater had significant meetings with their leadership to include CEH as a potential new site. WMM places physicians at overseas mission hospitals to serve patients in specialty areas and train national and missionary doctors. This has been part of our dream for many years! Pray that this will come to full fruition so that the ministry grows and better honors God. Facility Development This year we completed the construction of the clinic extension, the construction of 15 toilets, 10 showers and 5 sinks for the new conference/camp center as well as hospital/school complex. Improved IT, radio relays, and security cameras were installed early in the year and are working well. We initiated the 4th medical professional residence. Our crews also improved the principal entrance to the hospital with cement paving, new gates, parking and signage. We suffered our 3rd and 4th significant lightning strikes with some damage to the electrical system which we had to repair! We installed a new x-ray unit and further trained our technician staff. A container with new furnishings and equipment is now arriving in Conakry port. Pray that this will be effectively installed throughout the hospital. Children’s & Youth Ministries Late this summer we held the first annual Mamou Children’s Camp using the Fresh Rosée classrooms as teaching and dorm rooms for 160 youth. Updated facilities were used and meals were served to all by the MIAPE women’s group. Themes included personal purity as stewards of our body and total person before God. 70% of the students made commitments and took a commitment certificate home to cosign with their parents. Our two playground sets, and improved soccer field were used joyfully by all the campers. The MIAPE Sunday School of 125 children also celebrated in May using the same equipment. As part of their three-hour worship celebration of songs and skits and a sermon by a teen, 43 children also participated in quoting different verses representing what they all were learning by age group. These youth ministries are thriving with involvement of the young adults and parents. The new conference center also hosted a training conference for 24 Bible story teachers available to teach in all the regional Christian schools. Remember that 50% of the national population is under age 18! Fresh Rosée School served 430 students last year and expanded to 797 this year with a second location. They are now adding the final three years of high school classes. We extended the hospital’s solar electricity and water systems to FR. We are maintaining two Bible classes each week at all grade levels.
On the national final exams where public schools graduated 35%, our elementary 6th grade graduated 85%, and 95% of the 10th graders passed. Fresh Rosée School had the highest success rates of passage onto the next level of any schools in the Mamou region. Exam success rates exceeded public school performance by a wide margin, ranking highest in the Mamou region. This motivates parents to send their children to the FR school. 95% of the students are from a Muslim background. We are constantly seeking to improve facilities and teachers’ training. Testimony: F’s Story F is a young woman in her 20s. She began to hear the gospel through a friend and was attracted both to the young adult’s group and the women’s group of Christians. Her mother forbade her attendance, but she chose to sneak out covertly and attend meetings. Ultimately, she declared her decision to follow Christ, so her family put her clothing and possessions outside of the house and courtyard and she was told never to return.
She then moved into Pastor Moise’s house and shared the girls’ bedroom. She continues to attend meetings and has matured. She was given part-time jobs in the hospital and Fresh Rosée and also began to participate in her own expenses. In September her older sister visited CEH and was diagnosed with breast cancer. F began to lovingly care for her and facilitate the contacts in the hospital. Visiting Dr. Kohol did the surgery and offered to personally pay the surgical expenses himself. The sister has now also heard the gospel clearly and seen F’s supportive community as have the other family members. F was recently told she may return to the family if she now desires. Pray for F and her family! 2026 Priority Projects Extension of the surgical center (2 more ORs & recovery) — $85,000 Duplex to serve as housing for longer term missionaries in the coming year — $75,000 Ward G for OB/Gyn hospitalization (8 beds) with small maternity delivery area — $45,000 (80% funded) A full list of special projects is available on our donation page if you want to participate. With thanksgiving and praise we also keep a summary of the projects God has allowed us to complete over the past year. We invite you to review these and rejoice with us for all He has done. Praise Him! Financial Stewardship In 2024 our administrative and promotional expenses were 4.25% of donations, keeping 95.75% directly for mission projects in Guinea. This is accomplished through careful stewarding of God's resources and the dedicated work of many volunteers who have a passion for this ministry. Thank you again for your partnership in the Gospel. May we win Guinea for God! May your time with family and friends during Holidays and the final weeks of 2025 be Happy and Blessed! And the coming New Year be filled with God's blessings and opportunities to serve Him! Your brother in Christ, Dr. Dwight E. Slater MD CEO of CEH |
